Samaria Gorge - Hiking through the Samaria Gorge in Crete is an amazing, intense experience! It is the narrowest gorge in the world. Beautiful hike of 16 kilometers.
Tip: good, sturdy shoes - no flip-flops! Provide bottle of water, you can fill at the springs. After the gorge definitely go into the sea, good for the muscles, note the sand is black and very hot.
Bus ticket you can buy in Almyrida at the beach, buy early senl fully booked! The bus picks you up there and drops you off in the evening. Ticket gorge buy on the spot and do not forget to buy your boat ticket at the end of the gorge.
Gramvoussa / Balos - Excursion with boat trip, hiking, culture and beautiful views and tranquility at the lagoon.
You sail along the Gramvoussa peninsula, with its only beautiful nature, northward through the restful sea.
The first stop is planned on the island of Gramvoussa where a brisk walk to the mountain top with the medieval fortress on top is a must. The views up there are unique! Back down, a dip in the fresh sea is welcome.
Tip: Sturdy shoe for the climb + bottle of water
About two hours later the boat sails you to the Balos lagoon. Since there is no port you either swim to the shore yourself or go by small motor boat. The lagoon is large. You can walk for kilometers through the water, and at a depth up to your knees!
A few hours later, the boat leaves back to Kastelli! One of the most beautiful day trips!
Travelway: Take the boat at 10am in Kastelli. (departs punctually) You should be there about 30' in advance. Distance Kokino Chorio -Kastelli is 70 km, or an hour via the 'highway'. Do not book anything in advance through tour operators, but provide your own transportation to Kastelli and buy tickets for the boat there. (Cheaper!) There is plenty of parking.
Akrotiri - Two beautiful monasteries + hike + beach
The peninsula where Chania airport is also located. Head towards the airport, just before the exit to the airport turn left towards 'Agia Triada' and 'Moni Gouvernetou'.
Agia Triada has its own wine as well as olive oil! Then drive on to Moni Gouvernetou, park in front of the entrance, then walk through the gardens of the monastery to Moni Gouverneto itself.
Tip: Bring appropriate clothing, otherwise you will not be allowed inside.
Then continue walking towards the sea along a path past an abandoned town and the Moni Katoliko monastery. Continue your trek through the mountains all the way to the sea. Definitely worthwhile and very beautiful. Back is the same path, uphill, and consequently a bit more difficult. Always take a bottle of drinking water with you! You are in the middle of nowhere!
Tip: Sturdy shoes and bottle of water.
To end the day, enjoy a nice meal and a splash in the sea at Marathi beach. Here are many Greeks staying by the sea, on Sunday very busy (drive back to the roundabout, instead of right towards Chania go left).

Falasarna – Sfinari – Elafonissi (from Moni Chrissokalitissa)
All the way to the northwest of the island. Take The Old Road to Kissamos/Kasteli. From there, head in the direction of Falasarna. From a height you can see the beautiful beach (with its many greenhouses in front of it). Falasarna - beautiful beach and nice beach-bar.
From there follow the coastline south to Sfinari. Beautiful views and steep cliffs along the way. You can stop frequently o enjoy the views. Sfinari is an ideal village to pick a restaurant and enjoy the tranquility and delicious seafood. The best restaurants of Sfinari are on the beach. In the village turn right towards 'Beach', all the way to the end at the beach, turn left, and then you drive about 1 km along the beach until you reach the restaurants.
After lunch linger here or continue south to Elafonissi (you can do this in 1 day, or make 2 trips). Just before this paradise beach you will arrive at the Moni Chrisoskalitssa Monastery. Beautiful monastery, all whitewashed, built on a rock. Definitely make time to visit here. (€2 entrance)
The Elafonissi lagoon is a beautiful large beach, you can walk through the water to an islet about 200 meters further in the sea. pastel-colored sand. As a true beach and nature lover, it is best to take a day for Elafonissi. Can also be combined with Paleochora.
MIX trip - by scooter or car
Trip: This trip takes you through narrow roads and small mountain villages with a view of the different landscapes of beautiful Crete. Through Kokkino Chorio to Drapanos, Kefalas towards Georgioupoli. Then towards Argiroupoli, from there towards Kournas. Return via Georgioupoli, Armeni, Gavalochori to Almyrida.
TO DO in Georgioupoli - long sandy beach for a lovely walk, water sports activities, walk to the chapel (Agios Nikolaos) in the sea - watch out for slippery stones the way to it. Here you can take beautiful photos.
TO DO in Argiroupoli -Visit the natural waterfalls and enjoy a delicious trout freshly caught on site.
Tip: Restaurant 'The old mill' (The old mill') drive down on the right, you are between the waterfalls. Nice and fresh during the hot summer days.
TO DO in Kournas Lake -Rent a pedal boat on the freshwater lake or take a refreshing dip.
Scooter rental: In Almyrida at you can rent a scooter. Book early and note you must hold a B driver's license to drive a scooter in Greece.
Tip: Be careful if there are pebbles. (Do not brake or give extra throttle with the scooter) Always wear your helmet = mandatory. Moderate your speed and enjoy. Take plenty of sunscreen with you.
